kitchen scrubbies (to replace sponges)http://crochetpatterncentral.com/directory/scrubbers.php
That's a link to MANY different types of kitchen scrubbies, I like the plain round ones personally.
You can, of course, buy organic cotton yarn to make them (they have it at our AC Moore for $5.99 or $6.99 a skein, 3 oz. I believe). Then wash them in the laundry, hang them outside in the sun to get "disinfected". I have made about a dozen of these and rotate them every week or two. WHen they get too gross you just shred them with scissors and toss them in your compost, since they're organic cotton & not dyed, you don't have to worry about nasty stuff getting into your compost.
You can also make slightly tougher scrubbers with plastic bags, "plarn", http://www.myrecycledbags.com/200.../recycling-a-plastic-wedding-bag/
Of course for very tough scrubber you use netting. Of course buying netting to use isn't the greenest or most economical thing I could do so I'm going to try saving netting from bags of 5-lb onions, making a yarn out of it like the plarn out of plastic bags (narn? = netting + yarn ?!?!! ) I'll post a pic when it's done.
